What Is The Current Status Of The Iphone 3g Unlock?

Hey people, i might be getting a locked iphone from my friend soon, and i was wondering what the current status of the unlock is. Some websites i read that there are programs and other methods that are already out that will unlock the iphone. Other places, i hear that there is no current method of unlocking the iphone 3g. Can you please clarify this for me(directed more towards the people who have an iphone)
Thanks!

Visit http://www.phonedevil.com to purchase a legally unlocked version (i.e. a version that has NEVER been locked).

You CAN unlock the iPhone 3G in many ways. The easiest is using a Jailbroken application called yellowsn0w. But if you have upgraded your iPhone to 2.2.1 software, it permanently locks the baseband of the phone, leaving it impossible to unlock for the time being.

the easiest way to unlock it is by jailbreaking it and then using a sim card attachment. http://www.gsmunlocklabs.com/unlock-ipho...

You can only software unlock an iPhone with yellowsn0w which is on firmware 2.2 or lower. If you want to upgrade to 2.2.1 you can upgrade using a custom firmware. If you have an iPhone on 2.2.1 already you cannot unlock it currently as the 2.2.1 update altered the baseband which currently cannot be exploited.
